Functional skills

The Course Aim:

These qualifications are for learners of all ages. They are suitable for adults and young people across a wide range of settings. They will provide an individual with essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively, and independently in life and work.

Functional Skills English aims to:

Help learners develop the skills to read, write, speak, listen, and communicate in English in a variety of situations. These skills can be applied in the workplace, in real life, and for further study. 

Develop Confidence: Learners can build confidence and fluency in English, and a positive attitude towards the language. 

Prepare for Work: Learners can develop the skills they need to apply in the workplace. 

Prepare for Further Study: Learners can gain the qualifications they need to progress to further study. 

Get into University: Many universities accept Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications as part of their entry criteria. 

Adapt in Social Situations: Learners can develop the skills they need to adapt in social situations, which can be especially helpful for those with disabilities.

Provide practical skills that can be used in everyday life, work, and further study: 

Real-world Application: Functional Skills Maths helps learners apply mathematical thinking to solve problems in real-life situations, such as working out the best value deal. 

Employability: Functional Skills Maths can help improve employability and show employers that you have the basics covered for many jobs 

Further Study: Functional Skills Maths can provide a solid foundation for progression to further study or training. 

Personal Development: Functional Skills Maths can help with personal development, such as developing teamwork, presentation, and problem-solving skills.

Delivery method

Virtual Classroom (taught):

The curriculum will be delivered though taught sessions in a virtual classroom, via Microsoft Teams, where the learner will participate in the sessions and complete the associated assignments independently and with their peers. The assignments to be produced will use the following methods:

  • Videos

  • Independent Research

  • Group work

  • Case Studies

  • Question and Answering 

  • Reports Creation

  • PowerPoint Presentations

  • Leaflet Creation

  • Witness Statements

The Tutor will provide Individual feedback on every question in every unit, which will stretch and challenge the learner, along with referencing Functional Skills needs and Personal and Career Development. 

One-to-one support sessions are available as required with the learner’s Tutor and the frequency of this support will depend on the individual needs of the learner. Along with daily group workshops for challenging sections of the course, which will depend on the needs of the learners.

Taught Sessions 11:00am – 13.15pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays (Mandatory).

Potential Career Opportunities:

By completing this qualification learners could progress into the following roles (additional Qualifications may be required):

  • Colleague

Initial Eligibility Criteria:

  • Aged 19+ as of 31st August 2024

  • Resident in UK for last 3 years

  • Currently residing in the country

  • Not currently in Education
